Success Isn’t a Solo Sport: Why You Need Coaching & Community

June 18, 20254 min read

In the world of entrepreneurship, we often hear the phrase "self-made success." It sounds powerful, doesn’t it? Like a badge of honour you earn by doing it all on your own. But let me tell you something I’ve learned the hard way: success isn’t a solo sport.

Whether you're just starting out or scaling your business, there comes a moment where pure grit and strategy can only take you so far. The truth is, business gets better when you stop trying to figure it all out alone.

In this blog, we’re going to explore why coaching and community aren’t luxuries – they’re essentials. And why finding the right people to walk alongside you can change everything.

The Myth of the Lone Wolf

There’s a narrative many business owners buy into, especially at the beginning: that they should know how to do it all. That asking for help is a sign of weakness or inexperience. That true leaders build empires with nothing but their own two hands and some coffee-fuelled late nights.

That’s not how sustainable businesses are built.

The most successful entrepreneurs in the world have coaches, mentors, masterminds, and teams. They have people who help them see their blind spots, call them forward, and offer perspective when they’re too close to the problem to see clearly.

They don’t do it alone. Neither should you. The wolf is stronger with its pack.

Why Coaching Matters More Than You Think

A good coach is more than a cheerleader or accountability buddy. A great coach brings:

  • Clarity: They help you cut through the noise and figure out what really matters.

  • Challenge: They don’t let you play small or coast in your comfort zone.

  • Support: When things feel hard (and they will), they remind you of your why and walk with you through the wobble.

  • Strategy: They help you map the way forward – with your goals, your life, and your values in mind.

I’ve had coaches who helped me untangle messy thoughts, navigate huge decisions, and step into bolder action than I would’ve dared to take alone. I’m now lucky enough to be that coach for others, but I’ll never stop having mentors in my own corner too. Because coaching works. Full stop.

The Power of Community

Now let’s talk about community. Specifically: the kind of community that gets it.

Running a business can be isolating. Your friends and family might be supportive, but they often don’t understand what it really means to launch, grow, and maintain a business in today’s fast-moving online world. That’s where the magic of a values-aligned business community comes in.

Community gives you:

  • Connection: You don’t feel like the only one juggling a toddler and a to-do list the length of your arm.

  • Perspective: Someone else has been there and can offer insight.

  • Momentum: There’s something powerful about being in a group where action is the norm.

  • Celebration: Every win, no matter how small, is seen and applauded.

The Joy Work Club was built on this very premise, and The Members Club grew from there: that small business owners do better when they have people to bounce ideas off, be vulnerable with, and grow alongside.

What Happens When You Go It Alone

When you try to do it all yourself for too long, a few things tend to happen:

  • You spin your wheels, endlessly tweaking and second-guessing.

  • You get stuck in your own head, and imposter syndrome starts calling the shots.

  • You burn out. Because pushing alone is exhausting.

  • You plateau. Because there’s no one there to push you further.

And worst of all? You start to believe maybe you’re not cut out for this after all. That maybe everyone else has something you don’t. That thought is a lie and community is the antidote.

What to Look For in a Coaching Relationship or Community

Not all coaching or community spaces are created equal. When you’re choosing where to invest your time and energy, look for:

  • Shared values: Do you feel seen, respected, and safe here?

  • Evidence of results: Are people growing? Taking action? Making progress?

  • Room for honesty: Can you bring your whole messy, brilliant self?

  • Tough love with a soft landing: Growth requires challenge and care.

Whether it's one-to-one coaching, a group program, or a membership community, you deserve a space where your voice matters, your success is celebrated, and your challenges aren’t judged.

You Don’t Need to Earn Support

Let me say that again louder: you don’t need to earn support.

You don’t need to hit a certain revenue number.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You don’t need to be more organised, more focused, more anything.

You get to have support now, as you are. Because that’s what will help you move forward faster.
