Flex Your Courage: The Art and Strategy of Bold Choices
When we think of courage, we often picture grand, sweeping acts of bravery: someone running into danger to save a life or standing up for justice in the face of adversity.
But courage isn’t always about dramatic heroics.
In our everyday lives, especially as entrepreneurs and business leaders, courage shows up in much smaller yet equally transformative ways. It’s about making bold decisions, confronting challenges, and taking action even when fear tries to hold us back.
In this post, inspired by my latest podcast episode of The Joy Work Show, we’re going to explore what it really means to flex your courage muscle. Courage isn’t just a trait you either have or don’t have; it’s a skill you can develop, a strategy you can employ and an approach that can reshape your personal and professional life.
Courage vs. Confidence: What’s the Difference?
Let’s start by clearing up a common misconception: courage and confidence are not the same thing. Confidence comes from knowing you can do something because you’ve done it before or because you’ve trained for it. Courage, on the other hand, is what you need when you’re not sure you’ll succeed—when fear, doubt, or uncertainty looms large.
Confidence is the result of repetition and familiarity. It’s what you feel after you’ve built a track record of success. Courage, by contrast, is what propels you forward when you’re venturing into the unknown. It’s the energy that pushes you to take that first step, even when you’re terrified of falling.
Courage is the foundation for confidence. Each time you take a bold step, even if it doesn’t go perfectly, you’re building the evidence you need to feel confident next time. Think of courage as the spark and confidence as the fire it ignites.
Why Courage Matters in Business and Life
As a business owner, you’re faced with countless decisions that require courage. Whether it’s launching a new product, raising your prices, or speaking your mind in a challenging meeting, every bold choice carries an element of risk. But these risks are often where the greatest rewards lie.
Courage matters because it pushes us to move forward when it’s easier to stay put. It helps us make decisions aligned with our values and goals, even when those decisions feel uncomfortable. Without courage, we might never:
- Say yes to opportunities that stretch us.
- Say no to things that drain our energy.
- Make changes that lead to growth and transformation.
How I Use Courage to Change the Landscape
On my hardest days, when fear and doubt creep in, I use courage as my compass.
It’s not always easy, and it’s rarely glamorous.
Sometimes, courage means sitting down to write a difficult email or making a decision I’ve been avoiding for weeks. Other times, it means doing something completely unexpected to shift the energy of a situation.
Here’s the thing about courage: it doesn’t have to be big to be bold. Often, the smallest acts of bravery can change the trajectory of your day, your business, or even your life.
For me, that might mean:
- Picking up the phone to make a tough call.
- Taking five minutes to brainstorm solutions when everything feels stuck.
- Deciding to share something vulnerable with my team or community.
Each time I choose courage, I’m not just changing the immediate landscape—I’m also building momentum and proving to myself that I can handle whatever comes next.
Strategies for Building Courage
If courage feels elusive to you, don’t worry. It’s not something you’re born with; it’s something you cultivate. Here are a few strategies to help you flex your courage muscle:
1. Start Small
You don’t have to make monumental changes overnight. Begin with small, manageable actions that push you slightly outside your comfort zone. For example, if public speaking terrifies you, start by sharing your thoughts in a small meeting before tackling a large audience.
2. Reframe Fear as Opportunity
Instead of viewing fear as a signal to stop, see it as a sign that you’re on the edge of growth. Fear often accompanies the things that matter most. When you feel scared, ask yourself: what’s the opportunity here? What’s the potential reward on the other side of this discomfort?
3. Build a Support Network
Courage doesn’t mean going it alone. Surround yourself with people who inspire and encourage you. Whether it’s a mentor, a coach, or a group of like-minded peers, having a support network can make all the difference when you’re facing tough decisions.
4. Celebrate Your Wins
Each time you act courageously, take a moment to acknowledge it. Reflect on what you did, why it mattered, and how it felt. These small celebrations reinforce your bravery and make it easier to be courageous next time.
5. Practice Self-Compassion
Courage doesn’t mean being fearless or perfect. It’s okay to feel scared, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Be kind to yourself as you navigate challenges, and remember that every step forward—no matter how small—is progress.
Reflective Prompt: Take One Small Step
Now it’s your turn. Think about a decision you’ve been putting off—something that’s been sitting in the back of your mind, weighing you down.
It doesn’t have to be a life-changing choice; it could be as simple as reaching out to someone or setting a boundary.
Ask yourself:
1. What’s one small action I can take today to move closer to a decision?
2. What’s the worst that could happen if I take this step? What’s the best that could happen?
3. How will I feel once I’ve taken this action?
Then, commit to taking that step. It might feel scary, but remember: courage is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.
The Joy of Bold Choices
When you flex your courage muscle, you’re not just making bold decisions—you’re building a life and business that align with your deepest values and aspirations.
Courage opens doors to opportunities you never thought possible.
It helps you navigate challenges with resilience and grace. And most importantly, it allows you to show up authentically, even when it’s hard.
So, what’s your next bold move? What courageous step will you take today to change your landscape and create the life and business you truly want?
Whatever it is, know that you have the strength to make it happen. Now, go flex that courage muscle!
